1. What was our motivation for installing the panels?
   We were motivated by innovation & saving money on future our utility bills. We wanted to practice what we preach and show our customers that “this stuff works” and we are up to speed with solar technology
2. What was involved in the installation?
   There was a lot of up front paperwork, we trained our staff, researched the best methods, had to get permits & inspections along the way.
3. How do solar panels & the benefits translate for the average home owner?
   Solar Panels are a responsible thing to do. By installing them at your home or business, it shows you are doing what you can to save resources. Ultimately your utility costs will decrease.
4. What should people consider before installing?
   Do you have access to capital to pay for the installation? And do you have the patience to wait for the system to eventually pay off?
5. Are there still tax benefits for installing solar panels?
   There is a 30% Federal Tax credit through 2016!

Why am I sharing this story? Well, I believe this story is simliar to embracing the sun & its solar energy. Who would think that glass solar panels could actually slow your utility company’s electric meter down and run it backwards while you continue to use electricity? You can get to the other side of the river of self-sufficiency using solar energy. It’s not the easiest process. It’s not the most inexpensive process, but the ride IS worth it in the end.

THE LOOK

2012 definitely has a style all its own. The buzz word “clean lines” is starting to fade. “Glitz and Glammer” pieces are all through this years new arrivals.

THE MATERIALS

Ropes, Pulley’s, workable parts, industrial, scroll, shades, round balls, wood pendants, cork, crystal,and LED are all things that describe the “now fixtures.” Why? Why not!?

THE COLORS

Antique Brass (a new & hybrid version) is on its way out. Bronzes are getting lighter and looking more like a caramel color. Black is growing increasingly more popular than dark bronze. Grays are the new beige and, in my opinion, will stay that way for a long time ahead!

When businesses labor with local community agency’s like Generations of Indian Valley they are given a gift of story.  On Souderton’s MLK volunteer day, I was given a gift of joining some of my guys for the day and engaging in service.  Service is something that comes from my heart, this is something deep in my DNA.  The blood flows through my veins when I see the smiles of my guys at work.  Volunteering is not something they do once a year; this is part of their identity and belief system.  They care about our community, and they give back throughout the year.

Leading this company during a time of economic and climate changes makes me think about our local community in new ways.  I think about how I can help my neighborhood learn about saving money on their electric bills.  To help jumpstart those savings, Bergey’s Electric is giving away a free energy audit to help the homeowner learn practical ways to save! But there is so much more than saving money- there are real innovative solutions coming to our community, and the team at Bergey’s is leading the way.  I see it in their eyes, and I heard it in the stories shared around the table while we ate at Generations on MLK volunteer day.

What are the stories that have impacted your life, family and community?

I am going to spend 2012 listening to stories and retelling stories on the Bergey’s Electric Blog because people are asking me to share what I think.  That is a humbling ask, because I have been a part of this family business for generations, and I take seriously the requirements to lead in a way other people benefit from our service and solutions.  I guess you could say we are stepping out by faith to be a light in our community.  Or like the billboard on 309 says, “lighting the way since 1937″  (Our new billboard from the great people over at Adam’s Outdoor!)

The reason I enjoy serving the community through my work is because I love this area I grew up in. The community has needs. I can help and I want to help. Making a difference and challenging other to do the same has a beautiful result- Change! Part of that change began for us during the Souderton MLK “Call to Volunteer” Day. Three electricians gave their time for the full day at Generations of Indian Valley  working on the café decorative lighting project.  The changes are meant to give this dining space a warmer and intimate feel.  We chose Hubbardton Forge pendant fixtures from our Lighting Showroom (Dave Nyce is the manager there!)

I know that when we go to Generations of Indian Valley to have lunch in the future, it will give me warm feelings about our volunteer day and how we gave back to the community!

What does it take for a company to stay viable for 3 generations?
